Ryan Bayliss

Ryan is an internationally recognized battery expert. With extensive experience in academia and industry, he provides technical depth and commercial judgment in advanced energy storage and circular materials, two significant investment themes for Leitmotif. He is based in Palo Alto, California.
Before joining Leitmotif, Ryan was Director of Product Marketing at Sila Nanotechnologies, a silicon anode startup aiming to increase the energy density of electric vehicle batteries. Previously, Ryan was an Innovation Program Manager at Corning where he led teams through full-cycle product development and industrialization of engineered ceramics for clean air applications, which contributed to over $1 billion in new business. Before that, he established the battery products group within Corning’s Science and Technology Division.
In his academic career, Ryan was a Senior Research Fellow at Oxford in the Department of Materials. During that time, he co-founded and secured over $100 million in government funding for The Faraday Institution, the UK’s national battery research laboratory. He also spent two years jointly appointed as a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago and a member of the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) at Argonne National Laboratory.
Ryan holds a PhD in Materials from Imperial College London and a master’s and bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Birmingham. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and patents with over 1,000 citations.
